German Animal Welfare Federation (Deutscher Tierschutzbund)

The German Animal Welfare Federation (Deutscher Tierschutzbund), founded in 1881, is the largest animal welfare umbrella organization in Germany and Europe. They advocate for animal welfare through a multifaceted approach, including direct animal care, research, legislative advocacy, and public education. Their work encompasses a wide range of animal welfare issues, including dog keeping, responsible breeding, and the fight against the illegal puppy trade. It also operates the Sonnenhof, a special refuge for senior dogs and very young dogs.

The Federation also provides international support to animal welfare organizations in other countries, particularly in Eastern and Southern Europe, through initiatives like neutering campaigns and shelter support. Deutscher Tierschutzbund is also a member of the Eurogroup for Animals.
